My Danish Adventure

Arturas Kroleos, 28, hails from Lithuania and currently works as a welder for Dana Tank in the village of Lem, just a couple of kilometers east of Ringkøbing Fjord. When he’s not welding, Arturas is driving through the countryside, enjoying the epic nature that the beautiful part of Denmark, West Jutland, has to offer, or showing the Danes how it’s done at his local football club.

I work manufacturing water, air, and gas tanks for multiple industries. They are used by different companies across the world, in hospitals and production facilities – everywhere really.

My Danish adventure began when I decided to join a Danish employment agency. The agency had offices in Vilnius, Lithuania and they posted me at Dana Tank in Denmark. After working for them for two years through the agency, I was offered a full-time contract. I was happy about this as the full-time contract gives me more stability, security, and benefits.

I heard that Danish people are always happy!

I first decided to move to Denmark because I heard Danish people are always happy!

I have found this to be true – I’ve met lots of happy people here. And of course, Denmark itself is a beautiful country with a lot of natural beauty.

At the end of my first year working full-time for Dana Tank, I’m starting to find my feet. The team at work is a friendly bunch of guys – some Danish, some Lithuanian like me and the others are Polish and Latvian – so four nationalities in all. We are quite an international company in that respect.

I speak with everybody at work in English mainly or to the Lithuanian guys in Lithuanian. But I’m hoping to improve my Danish as I want to build a life for myself here and I know the language is important for that. It’s tough to work and learn Danish at the same time, but that is what I’m aiming for now.

One of the things I like about my life here in Denmark is the good working conditions

Dana Tank is a great place to work both socially and professionally.

They have a social side as well as the professional benefits. We have a Christmas party every year, BBQs in the summer and sometimes evening drinks. Not so far from Lem there are other bigger towns like Skjern where there is some more town life and more places to drink and go out in.

There are better wages here and strong unions that protect everybody. I would say that you are never overworked. We put in a good day’s work, but the work we do is respected.

My life in Denmark is quite a contrast with where I’m from in Lithuania. My family lives in the capital city of Lithuania Vilnius, which of course is busy and has a lot going on. Where I live now in Lem is very small in comparison – but it’s just a different way of life. I drive around in nature. I do a lot of sport every day and I’m soon signing up for my local football club. When I was younger, I played football for 15 years. I was pretty good, and I know the Danes love football too, so that should be fun to explore!

Getting back to Lithuania is quite easy by plane. I miss my friends and family, but I go regularly to Lithuania to visit – maybe once every two months.

Where do I see myself in 5 years? I don’t know! I’m that person who never says never you know! I can’t say, but maybe in Australia or somewhere!
