In 2016, as a skilled milling technologist, Xenophon had several options available when it came to his career. His education had taken him to Switzerland, but he still had ambitions to spread his wings in another part of Europe. Learning good things about Denmark led to discovering a professional opportunity at Valsemøllen, where he now works as part of a small, ambitious milling team responsible for the production and quality control of Valsemøllen’s products.

Denmark stood out for a number of reasons

I received a technical education as a milling technologist after attending the Swiss School of Milling in St. Gallen, Switzerland. It is this technical background that brought me to Denmark and was the gateway to my current job at Valsemøllen.

When I decided to move to Denmark it was the right moment for me to explore and have new experiences in my life. I was confident with my professional expertise, and this meant I had options. When I investigated Denmark via internet research the good quality of life and great working conditions stood out. But there were many things coming together that made Denmark the right move."

My manager had a positive and practical approach both to the job and life outside of work

I was invited to interview by my current manager, and I was impressed with the positive energy I experienced from him. Not only was I interviewed for two days, visiting the production site, and meeting other employees, but there was a lot of discussion about life in general. I had a lot of questions about life in Denmark and my manager always had direct answers. It was this kind of attention to both work life and my life outside of work that made me feel secure and confident to make the move.

I already had Greek friends living in Copenhagen who really loved it here. Salaries are also good in Denmark, which wasn’t my priority but also plays an important role in any decision to move countries.

The workplace at Valsemøllen is very organised and scheduled

All my tasks and responsibilities are planned out and given the time they need, which means I always feel able to do a good job. As milling can be quite a physical job my company also offers private health insurance that meant when I had a problem with my shoulder, I got treatment quickly and effectively.

The people here are friendly and there is also a thriving international community

I’m happy to be here in Denmark, the people are very friendly and helpful, and I feel safe and secure here. As an English speaker you can easily integrate as everyone here speaks very good English. Denmark is an international country, and you can meet people from different cultures. A lot of my friends here are from different countries, and I like that international element of living here. I also enjoy the countryside in Denmark which is great to explore. I’ve travelled all around the island of Sjælland and my next plan is a road trip exploring Jylland and the neighbouring countries to Denmark.

Now I live in my own apartment in Gløstrup I see my future here in Denmark

On my commute to Valsemøllen in Køge I listen to Danish radio. Now that I feel settled in my job, my next task is to work on my Danish language skills. I think this is a good thing so I can develop closer relationships with the Danish speakers in my life.

My vision for the future is to become even better at my job and learn more. My fiancée lives and works here, so at the moment I can only see my future here in Denmark. I miss Greece, but we live in the modern world where distances are not an issue. I think I made a great decision to come to Denmark – I’m really happy here, and I have no regrets.
